March 19, 2022 | Men's Volleyball
The Cardinals completed the annual two-match series sweep over the Buckeyes for the first time since 2014
MUNCIE, Ind. - It was an emotional day for the Ball State men's volleyball team as the Cardinals held a celebration of life ceremony for Dr. Don Shondell prior to tonight's match against rival Ohio State.
The Cardinals (15-2, 7-1 MIVA) were able to celebrate Dr. Shondell by earning a 3-1 victory over the Buckeyes (9-11, 4-5 MIVA) in Mid-Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action Saturday night in Worthen Arena.
With the win, Ball State completed the two-match home-and-away series sweep for the first time since the 2014 season.
The Cardinals were led offensively by Angelos Mandilaris who tallied 14 kills while Kaleb Jenness finished the night with 11. Defensively, Felix Egharevba collected nine total blocks while Mandilaris had seven.
There was no doubt that tonight's competition between these two rivals was going to be a battle.
The match started off strong for the Buckeyes and they were near victory in the first set until Mandilaris along with Jenness and Quinn Isaacson made some crucial offensive plays at the net placing their kills strategically which ultimately led to BSU taking set one from Ohio State, 26-24.
The Cardinals came out with a vengeance in the second frame connecting on all cylinders. Ball State jumped ahead 18-10 over Ohio State late in the set and never looked back. Ball State would take the second set by a score of 25-16.
Ohio State never gave up though, and true to form fought its way back to take the third, 25-23.
Dropping the third frame didn't seem to faze Ball State as the Cardinals quickly scored four straight points to take the early 4-0 edge against the Buckeyes. After that, both teams went back-and-forth which was followed by a few ties that ended at 18-18. Key blocking from Egharevba and Mandilaris along with some kills helped Ball State seal tonight's victory with the Cardinals taking set four, 25-22.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will be back in MIVA action next weekend when it travels to Quincy on Friday, March 15 for an 8 pm ET first serve. The Cardinals will then face Lindenwood on Saturday, March 26 at 7 pm ET.
