Ball State competes at Blizzard Buster in Oxford, Ohio
OXFORD, Ohio – The Ball State track and field team completed its first outdoor meet of the 2022 season at the Blizzard Buster in Oxford, Ohio Friday afternoon.
"It was a good opener," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "It was good to be able to get outside and start introducing some of the events that we pick up during the outdoor season - javelin, 400-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay, steeple chase.
"It was good to see individuals get out and be competitive. Overall, it was a good performance and a good opener. Obviously, there's things that we'll get better on, but you have to start somewhere and establish where you're at, and then build on it."
Kayla Jones ran an all-time personal record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.39, good for second place and just .08 away from first place.
Maddie Aul ran a track lifetime-best in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:29.73.
The javelin throwers of Charity Griffith and Karlie Zumbro each set personal records in their first throw of the season. Zumbro hit a mark of 35.84 meters, good for second, while Griffith threw the javelin 30.50 meters.
Back on the track, Jenna Oriani placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.44. She also led seven Cardinals in the 200-meter dash with a third-place finish in a time of 25.29. Payton Barlow and Jenelle Rogers each won their heat in the same event.
Karleigh Conner guided a pack of nine Cardinals in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:48.29. Carly Spletzer was just behind her with a personal-best time of 4:48.79. In addition, Jessica Velez ran a personal-best time of 5:09.71.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Emma Potter, Oriani, Moriah Johnson and Michelle Lehmann crossed the line in a time of 47.14, good for second and just .08 away from placing first.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the quartet of Spletzer, Barlow, Ashley Craycraft and Alexis Thigpen set a season-best and finished second with a time of 9:46.72.
Ball State returns to the track next week when it splits the squad for meets at the Miami Relays and Texas Relays.
