Men’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Battle At BYU

PROVO, Utah - No. 10 Ball State men's volleyball team battled on the road Friday night at No. 9 BYU but fell 3-2 in a five-set thriller that featured 34 lead changes along with eight ties and a set that went into extra points.
The Cardinals (5-1) hit .319 as a team, totaling 66 kills off 138 swings while BYU (5-2) registered a .323 hitting percentage with 62 kills off of 133 total attacks.
For the game, senior outside attacker Kaleb Jenness led all players with a game high 24 kills. Freshman middle blocker Vanis Buckholz along with teammate newcomer Dyer Ball each had 11 kills apiece.
Defensively, senior middle blocker Felix Egharevba had six blocks while senior libero collected 12 digs.
Ball State was down 20-12 late in the first set but kills from Jenness, along with senior outside attacker Angelos Mandilaris and Buckholz allowed the Cardinals to fight their way back to even the score against BYU, 23-23. As the set went on point-for-point, BSU managed to come out atop of BYU, 32-30.
The second frame was a just as close until the Cardinals finally took a 22-19 advantage after a BYU service error. A Jenness kill put Ball State in position for set point. On BYU's ensuing possession David Gardini would have a hitting error allowing Ball State to take set two, 25-20.
After the break, BYU came back with a vengeance and evened the score 2-2 by taking sets three and four from the Cardinals.
For the second-straight match, BSU went to a fifth set but unfortunately for the Cardinals the win column went to the Cougars tonight.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will have a re-match against BYU on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET
