MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's volleyball team completed its two-match Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) weekend with a 3-0 sweep over Quincy Friday night in Worthen Arena.
With the win, Ball State improved to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in MIVA play, while Quincy dropped to 3-9 for the season and 0-6 in league action.
The first set was close, but Ball State never lost sight of victory. The Cardinals eventually went up by seven (18-11) after a kill from Bryce Behrendt. Quincy wasn't going to go away quickly, rallying to within one point (21-20) off a kill from the Hawk's Niall Burton. But back-to-back kills from Dyer Ball put BSU back up by three, which eventually led to the Cardinals taking the first frame, 25-22.
After that, Quincy came out on fire in the second set, taking an early 6-2 edge over Ball State. The Cardinals then began to click on all cylinders, taking a late 20-15 advantage over the Hawks. Quincy struggled to rally its way back as Ball State took set two, 25-17.
The Cardinals led the third frame early at 7-4 before the Hawks regrouped to make it a close contest yet again. Ball State took control of the situation to go back up 17-13 after a kill and a block from Ball. Quincy didn't go away quietly and fought back to knot set three, 17-17. Finally, a kill from Nick Martinski and a triple block from Martinski, Vanis Buckholz and David Flores put the Cardinals back up, 21-19.
BSU was led by Behrendt with 10 kills. The Cardinals used their backup setter Flores, who dished out 34 assists. Defensively, Flores and Buckholz each tallied four block assists apiece.
Ball State will get a break from competition next week before it returns to the court on March 11 at New Jersey Institute of Technology for a 6 p.m. ET first serve. The Cardinals will also play at Princeton that weekend on March 12 with that match scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
