WBB’s Comeback Bid Falls Short in Season Opener at Tennessee Tech

Some unforeseen errors by Ball State forced the Cardinals to foul the Golden Eagles in the final seconds of the game. Tennessee Tech was successful from the charity stripe and was able to escape with the 68-63 victory.
Ball State rallied from 12 points down at the start of the final stanza to give itself a chance to win at the Eblen Center.
For the game, Anna Clephane led the Cardinals with 12 points while newcomers Alex Richard and Sydney Shafer each had 11 points apiece. Senior Annie Rauch rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points while defensively, sophomore Marie Kiefer pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals came out confident in the opening minutes as Kiefer opened the contest with a quick layup. Ball State continued to control the momentum by eventually building a 7-3 advantage over Tennessee Tech. Both teams were composed and played stellar defense the first 10 minutes of action. The Golden Eagles would eventually come out atop of the Cardinals 18-14 at the end of the first period.
Tennessee Tech finally found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter outscoring Ball State 21-10. The Golden Eagles would take a 39-24 advantage over the Cardinals at intermission.
Clephane made her return to the lineup after being sidelined last year due to an injury, she and Shafer led the Cardinals after the first half with seven points each.
After the break, Ball State began chipping away at the Golden Eagles' 19-point lead making the score 55-45 at the 1:46 mark in the third period of play. The Cardinals managed to put together a 6-0 run which was sparked by back-to-back second chance layups from Kiefer and Rauch. Ball State was able to remain within reach of Tennessee Tech, trailing by only 12 points to end the third.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home Monday, Nov. 14 against IU East for the Cardinals' annual "Field Trip Day." The game is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET in Worthen Arena.
