Women’s Basketball Opens Home Play with 100+ Win Over IU East
November 14, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - In front of 4,067 screaming fans on the sixth-annual Ball State Women's Basketball Field Trip Day, the Cardinals opened home action with a 105-51 win over IU East Monday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
Ball State (1-1) set the tone early against the Red Wolves (0-7) outscoring IU East 26-16 in the first quarter and then 32-7 in the second frame. The first half was capped off by a last second steal and fast break layup from sophomore Ally Becki.
The Cardinals were unstoppable in the paint today outscoring the Red Wolves 74-26. Ball State also made 45 field goals, which is just two shy of the program's Worthen Arena record.
All this offense was made possible by five Cardinals who reached double-digit scoring on the day, led by redshirt senior Anna Clephane's 22-point performance. Behind Clephane, was sophomore Marie Kiefer, who earned her first double-double of the season scoring 16 points and adding 10 rebounds. In her home debut, freshman Sydney Bolden dropped in 12 points while teammates sophomore Madelyn Bischoff and senior Annie Rauch each chipped in 10 points apiece.
However, it was not necessarily the scoring that led to the Cardinals 54-point victory over IU East. Ball State's defense played a huge role early in the ball game. The Cardinals held the Red Wolves to only 23 points in the first half, including only seven in the second quarter alone. Ball State also forced IU East to commit 31 turnovers while the Cardinals would score 41 points off those miscues.
The remaining two quarters mimicked the first and second frames as the Cardinals controlled their destiny throughout the competition. Despite their efforts, the Red Wolves were unable to fight their way back into the game.
