PROVO, Utah - It was an up and down affair throughout the entire 40 minutes of the contest between the Cardinals and the Cougars. Ball State was able to out play BYU in the final stanza to take home the 61-56 victory Saturday evening at the Marriott Center.
The Cardinals (4-2) succeeded in a lot of areas today but the one that stuck out the most was their 11 made 3-pointers. That, along with some intense defense, helped propel Ball State past BYU (2-5) to clinch the victory.
"Proud of the heart my team displayed today," Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee said. "After 3,600 miles of travel this week and playing three games in seven days, to put forth the amount of effort we just did is amazing. It has been a great trip."
Although both teams battled on the defensive end the Cardinals fought a little harder plus capitalized on both sides of the ball. Ball State outscored BYU 29-21 in the final frame of action.
Today's contest consisted of four ties and nine lead changes with BYU having the lead for over half of the duration of the ball game, 21:24, to be exact.
The game was tied 45-45 for the last time with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore Marie Kiefer found graduate senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir for a 3-point basket with under a minute left that would allow the Cardinals to take a 48-45 edger over the Cougars into the final 10 minutes of play.
After that, sophomore Ally Becki opened the fourth period with a jumper which sparked a 9-5 run that helped put Ball State at a nine-point (59-50) advantage over BYU with 2:23 left in the ball game.
BYU continued to fight but Ball State's defense was able to fend the Cougars off from making a comeback.
For the game, Becki led the Cardinals in scoring with 17 points while also draining three 3-pointers plus added five rebounds. Redshirt senior Anna Clephane registered 12 points while sophomore Madelyn Bischoff chipped in with 11.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to Worthen Arena Friday, Dec. 2 against Western Kentucky. The game is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
