WBB Uses Strong Second Quarter to Earn First Win Out West at Utah State
November 23, 2022 | Women's Basketball
LOGAN, Utah - The Ball State women's basketball team (3-2) led most of the contest due to an up-tempo offense and some fierce defense that set the tone as the Cardinals went on to defeat Utah State (1-4), 80-55, Wednesday night in Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Arena.
"After a long day of travel yesterday, I was really impressed with my teams' energy level and toughness today," Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "We were locked in defensively today and turned that "D" into a lot of easy buckets."
It was a slow start for both squads in the opening 10 minutes of action. The game was knotted 15-15 with 2:55 left in the first quarter. As time was winding down, redshirt senior Anna Clephane drew a foul knocking down both from the charity stripe and then scored a layup in the final seconds to give Ball State the 19-15 edge over Utah State at the end of the first stanza.
Sophomore Madelyn Bischoff opened the second frame with a layup, while fellow sophomore Marie Kiefer followed that play with a rebound and then a fast break layup that clearly got the Cardinals on the right track. After that, Ball State outscored Utah State 27-8 for the remainder of the quarter. Utah State never recovered from the Cardinals' 55 percent (10-18) shooting in that frame. Ball State also held the Aggies to 20 (2-10) percent from the floor. The Cardinals continued to play both sides of the ball well and would take an impressive 46-23 cushion over the Aggies at intermission.
For the game, it was a well-rounded scoring effort with the starting five players plus the bench chipped in with 40 points. Ball State had 11 players score two or more points. Bischoff and senior Annie Rauch led Ball State in scoring with 12 points apiece. Defensively, Rauch led the Cardinals with eight rebounds.
The Ball State women's basketball team will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 23 at BYU. The game is slated to begin at 4 pm ET.
