SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Sophomore Madelyn Bischoff scored a career-best 15 points in the Cardinals 95-60 loss against the No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Sunday afternoon at the Joyce Center. With the loss, Ball State falls to 2-2 on the season while Notre Dame remains undefeated with a 4-0 ledger.
A made jumper by sophomore Ally Becki and a 3-pointer from classmate Bischoff allowed the Cardinals to take a 6-3 edge over the Fighting Irish in the opening minutes of play. Ball State continued to play gritty basketball throughout the first quarter, still having the lead over Notre Dame at the 3:49 mark after a fast break layup from freshman Sydney Bolden, making the score 15-14.
After that, the Fighting Irish started to do what they do best and that is score. Notre Dame closed the first 10 minutes of play with a 13-3 scoring spree that allowed the Fighting Irish to take a 27-18 advantage over the Cardinals as both teams headed into the second quarter of action.
The Cardinals struggled to get shots to fall the remainder of the first half. Notre Dame kept the pressure on and led 54-27 at intermission.
Ball State began to find its groove again on offense in the third and fourth periods. Graduate senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir chipped in nine points in the third stanza while sophomore Marie Kiefer found success from inside the paint in the fourth quarter as she scored eight points off 3-of-3 shooting from the field and went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
Notre Dame expanded its defense and continued its hot shooting hand the remainder of the contest. Ball State was unable to put points on board to catch-up with Notre Dame's strong shooting in the end.
For the game, Bischoff led the Cardinals with 15 points while Agustsdottir added 11 including 3-of-5 shooting from behind the arc. Rounding out the double figure scoring was Kiefer with 10 points. She also led Ball State defensively with eight rebounds, two block solos and one block assist.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues non-conference action as it heads out west for the Thanksgiving break to take on Utah State (Nov. 23) and BYU (Nov. 26). Both contests are scheduled to tip-off at 4 pm ET.
