Defense Shines in WBB’s Win Over In-State Rival Butler
November 17, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - As you would expect in any in-state rivalry game, the contest would become a hard-fought battle from start to finish. The Cardinals (2-1) succeeded in a lot of areas in tonight's game but the one that stuck out most was their second half defense which led Ball State to an 84-68 victory over the Butler Bulldogs (1-2) Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
"Tonight's game was a grind, and it was a beautiful grind," Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "I am happy with the way we played tonight. We did a great job in the second half taking care of the ball. We went 9-3 in the turnover category and all the points that came as a result ended up getting us the big W."
At the start of the game both teams were neck-and-neck which included four ties and eight lead changes. The Bulldogs took a slight 33-32 edge over the Cardinals at intermission.
After the break, Ball State made some minor adjustments to their defensive game, and it showed as the Cardinals turned up the aggressiveness which gave the Bulldogs some fits in the third and fourth quarters.
With the game knotted at 40 at the 6:09 mark in the third frame of action, Ball State closed out the quarter with an 18-8 scoring spree. The run was capped off by sophomore Alex Richard's layup allowing Ball State to take a 10-point advantage (58-48) over Butler in the final stanza.
The Cardinals' second half press adjustments, which were accompanied by some good ball handling, eventually led to Ball State's largest cushion of the contest, a 21-point lead (82-61) after a Hana Mühl driving layup with 2:09 left in the contest.
For the game, Ball State had four players in double figures with sophomore Ally Becki leading the charge with 18 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Redshirt senior Anna Clephane scored in double digits for the third-straight game after registering 15 points on the night. Graduate senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and sophomore Madelyn Bischoff ended the night with 12 points apiece.
Ball State forced Butler to commit 21 turnovers on the night which turned into 20 points for the Cardinals. BSU also shot over 50 percent from the field and scored 36 points in the paint.
The Ball State women's basketball team will continue non-conference action when it travels to ACC foe No. 9/11 Notre Dame Sunday for a 4 pm ET tipoff at the Joyce Center.
