Cardinals Fell in Hard-Faught Battle to Broncos
October 09, 2022 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team returned to the pitch for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Western Michigan on Sunday. The Broncos knocked off the Cardinals 2-0.
"Credit to Western, they brought more of an edge today than we did consistently," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "That's the beauty of the MAC, anyone on any given day can drop a game if they don't bring everything they have. I thought we continued to battle to the end, but at the end of the day, just not enough overall quality. There are still plenty of games to play and we will start preparing for the next match,"
BSU fell to 5-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in MAC play, while WMU improved to 3-5-5 overall and 3-1-2 in conference action.
The Cardinals and Broncos found themselves in a defensive battle at the half. WMU recorded the only shots on goal in the first half, with three. Bethany Moser made three saves for the Cardinals.
The Broncos got on the board first in the 64th minute when Jenna Blackburn found the back of the net. Western Michigan extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Reagan Wisser in the 72nd minute.
Moser finished the match with six saves and moved her season total to 49. Avery Fenchel recorded two of Ball State's three shots on goal. Maya Millis notched the other shot on goal.
Hannah Sargent made three saves for WMU and picked up a shutout.
The Cardinals return to the Briner Sports Complex on Thursday, Oct. 13, as the Akron Zips make the trip to Muncie. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
