Ball State Battles Akron to Draw
October 13, 2022 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State soccer team returned to the friendly confines of the Briner Sports Complex on Thursday for a Pink Match against Akron. Avery Fenchel notched her 11th goal of the season to lead the Cardinals to a 1-1 draw with the Zips.
Ball State moved to 5-4-5 overall and 4-1-2 in MAC play, while Akron is now 2-7-3 overall and 1-5-1 in conference action.
"Tough game today," said Head Coach Josh Rife. "It was another hard-fought battle. Ultimately, we didn't have consistent enough quality throughout the match to push us over the finish line. We will need to regain our sharpness to put together a strong run as we close out the conference schedule."
In the fifth minute, Lexi Fraley recorded the match's first shot on goal, but the Zips' keeper made the save.
The Cardinals saw their first scoring chance in the 19th minute on a corner kick from Lexy Smith. Jenna Dombrowski was on the end of the corner and headed it towards net. Dombrowski's shot went off the far post.
In the 22nd minute, Abby Elgert ripped a shot high and towards the far post that looked to be heading to the back of the net, but the Akron keeper made a great save to keep the match scoreless.
The Cardinals broke through in the 32nd minute when Elgert sent in an outstanding cross into the box. Fenchel was there for the first touch in front of the goal and buried it into the back of the net. Fenchel's 11th goal of the season put the Cardinals on top 1-0.
The Ball State defense was perfect in the first half as it held Akron to zero shots for the entire half.
In the 51st minute, the Zips had their first scoring chance, but Bethany Moser was there to make an unbelievable save on a shot that was ripped from just inside the box.
Akron was able to get the match-tying goal in the 76th minute as Emma King managed to find the back of the net.
Moser finished the match with three saves, all coming in the second half. Her counterpart Penelope Cuirinier made four saves.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 16, on the road against Ohio. First touch is slated for 1 p.m.
