Women’s S&D Wins Five Events at Indiana Intercollegiates

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - It was quite the collegiate debut for freshman swimmer Payton Kelly who chalked up three event wins to help lead the Ball State women's swimming & diving team to a second-place finish at Saturday's Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Purdue.
The Canadian swimmer, who was invited to compete in the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup hosted this coming weekend in Toronto, took home top honors in both the 50 freestyle (23.45) and the 100 freestyle (51.55). She also swam leadoff for the first-place 200 freestyle relay which combined for a time of 1:35.05.
Kelly's winning time of 23.45 in the 50 freestyle was the eight-best individual mark in program history.
Also picking up a freestyle win for the Cardinals was Brazilian star junior Marcella Ribeiro, who clocked in at 1:54.04 to take gold in the 200 freestyle. The program record holder in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle, Ribeiro also placed fourth the 500 freestyle and swam the third leg for the winning 200 freestyle relay.
Joining Kelly and Ribeiro on the winning relay were sophomore Hannah Jones and senior Apsara Sakbun. Jones would also tally an individual win, touching the wall in 56.41 in the 100 backstroke.
Overall, the Cardinals picked up five event wins at the meet and 13 top five efforts.
Host Purdue won the eight-team meet with 792.5 points, followed by the Cardinals (500.5) and IUPUI (326.5) to round out the top three.
The Ball State women's swimming & diving team returns to action Friday, when it welcomes Eastern Illinois to the Lewellen Aquatic Center for a 6 p.m. coed meet.
