Men’s Volleyball Remains Undefeated With 3-0 Sweep Over George Mason
January 21, 2022 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's volleyball team remained undefeated this season after posting its third-straight 3-0 sweep but this time it was against George Mason Friday night in Worthen Arena.
Although the start of each set was close in the beginning, the Cardinals (3-0) performed with a lot of confidence as the match went on against the Pioneers (2-1). Ball State was able to take impressive leads in the middle of frames one, two and three which eventually led to its victory.
"It was a really good job out of our guys tonight," said Ball State first-year head coach Donan Cruz. "I thought playing a team that is a lot more consistent on the other side of the net really challenged us to do some things at a high level. I also thought we attacked at a really good efficiency offensively tonight."
Coach Cruz was right in each set Ball State improved offensively hitting .393 in the first then .433 in the second while registering a staggering .565 in the final frame of action.
The Cardinals were led by graduate student opposite hitter Angelos Mandilaris who had a personal best 16 kills off of 26 swings for an impressive .538 hitting percentage. And of course no offense can be successful without their graduate student setter Quinn Isaacson who led the offense with .625 success rate after dishing out 40 assists while helping six of his teammates record at least two or more kills. He also added seven digs.
Senior outside attacker Kaleb Jenness has been consistent offensively over the years for the Cardinals turning in a 12 kills tonight for Ball State.
Defensively, senior outside attacker Nick Martinski had eight block assists while his classmate senior middle blocker Felix Egharevba finished the night with seven. Graduate student libero Colin Ensalaco finished the ended the night with 10 digs.
Tonight's contest was competitive and it wasn't always certain the Cardinals were going to win in three but fortunately Ball State remained composed and consistent making some smart decisions on both sides of the net which allowed BSU to come out atop over George Mason this evening.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will welcome the 2021 reigning national championships Hawai'i to Worthen Arena for the first time in program history on Saturday, Jan. 29 and Monday, Jan. 31. First serve for both matches will be at 7 p.m. ET.
