September 06, 2021 | Men's Golf
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - It was a phenomenal start to the 2021-22 season for Ball State senior golfer Joey Ranieri, as he carded a 54-hole score of 212 to finish fifth among 84 golfers at the Hoosier Collegiate Invite.
After shooting 68 to tie for the lowest opening-round score Sunday at the Pfau Course at Indiana University, Ranieri followed with back-to-back rounds of 72 to conclude the two-day event at -1, four strokes behind event winner Drew Salyers from Indiana.
Ranieri's 68 in the opening round ties as the second-lowest round of his career, as does his 54-hole total score of 212. The last time he scored that low was at the Trinity Forest Invitational (Sept. 22-24, 2019) when he carded a career-low second round of 67 on the way to a total score of 212. His lowest career 54-hole score, a 209, came one week earlier at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 15-17, 2019).
Led by Ranieri's effort, the Cardinals finished in a three-way tie for seventh among a strong 15-team field with a score of 888 (+36). Cincinnati and Illinois tied for the team win, with each squad shooting 858 (+6). Host Indiana was third at 860 (+8).
Also scoring a top 20 individual finish for Ball State was junior Evan Bone at 220 (+7). Bone's best round was also the opening round when he shot a career-low 71.
A pair of Cardinals also turned in solid performances in the collegiate debuts, with redshirt freshmen Ali Khan and Griffin Hare tying for 42nd (+14) and 47th (+17), respectively. Both also had excellent second rounds Sunday, with Hare shooting 73 and Kahn scoring 74.
Rounding out Ball State's lineup was junior Joey Wiseman who tied for 60th (+23). Yorktown, Indiana, native and redshirt freshman Carson Orr also made his collegiate debut as an individual, tying for 70th (+31).
The Ball State men's golf team returns to action Sept. 17-18, when it hosts the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club.
