The Ball State men's basketball program has added another impact player in Demarius Jacobs. The 6-2 combo guard played three seasons at Saint Louis University and is immediately eligible to play for BSU in 2021-22.Â
A Chicago native, Jacobs played in 68 games and started 29 for SLU, which played in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and 2021 NIT. Described as an athletic and versatile playmaker, Jacobs has averages of 5.9 points and 2.1 rebounds with .442 shooting over the past two seasons. He shot .690 on 2-point attempts last season and and is a .367 shooting from 3-point range over the past two seasons.
"Demarius is a tremendous edition to our team. He has played on very good teams at Saint Louis, is explosive on offense and an elite finisher at the rim," head coach James Whitford said. "His efficiency numbers at SLU were remarkable and he's a gifted and disruptive defender. Demarius is excited to get to work, and I can't wait to work with him."
As a sophomore in 2019-20, Jacobs was a full-time backcourt starter for a team that went 23-8. Capable of big scoring games, he scored 20 points in a win over Valparaiso and 18 in a win over UMass. In a 2020 Philadelphia road swing against La Salle and Saint Joseph's, Jacobs scored 27 points on 10-for-15 shooting.Â
Last year, he played in 20 games and had a couple impactful performances. He had a 13-point, 4-rebound effort in a win over LSU and scored 11 points when Saint Louis defeated A-10 champion St. Bonaventure.
Whitford also cited Jacobs's makeup off the court, noting he's "a high-character young man from a great family." Whitford said Jacobs is determined to reach his potential on and off the court.Â
"I believe he can achieve great things during his two years in Muncie," the head coach said. "He's a great student on pace to graduate and he has a passion for the game of basketball."
Jacobs played high school ball at Uplift in Chicago, where he scored 19.3 points per game as a senior. He also attended Hillcrest Prep for a year, averaging 13.3 points on 51 percent shooting and 43 percent 3-point shooting.
