Cardinals Win Friday Pitcher's Duel

ATHENS, Ohio - With two aces going on a Friday night, offense was at a premium. Ball State had enough offense and found itself on the right side of the 4-3 duel at Ohio, keeping pace at the top of the conference standings.
John Baker (7-3) got the win and the Cards improved to 24-9 in conference play to match Central Michigan, which won 14-0 on Friday.Â
CLOSE, BUT IN CONTROL: The Cards took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning and never trailed. After getting the game's first run on a wild pitch early, the Cards held serve and the took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 7th. With Tyler Schweitzer earning the 2-inning save, the Cardinals improved to 14-0 on the year when leading after 8 innings.
FRIDAY DUEL: Baker did his usual, going 7.0 innings and allowing two runs. Ohio managed nine hits off him but Baker always got the clutch out when he needed it. Baker also held Ohio to 3-for-17 with runners on base and 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Ohio's Joe Rock, one of the better arms in the league, was just as good. He went 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts and allowed two earned runs. Both teams combined for just three extra-base hits and 2-for-20 hitting with two outs.
TYLER, THE CLOSER: Schweitzer earned his second save of the season with a 39-pitch outing. He retired six of the eight batters he faced and struck out four. Schweitzer leads the team with 21 appearances this season.
CAPITALIZE: Ohio made two errors, threw four wild pitches and hit two batters (but didn't allow a walk) to set the stage for the patient Cardinals to strike. Aaron Simpson singled then scored on a wild pitch and an error in the 7th inning. The first run of the game came from Nick Powell, who score from 3rd on a wild pitch.Â
Ryan Peltier, Simpson and Trenton Quartermaine each went 2-for-4, combining for six of Ball State's eight hits.Â
UP NEXT: BSU and Ohio will play a pair of 7-inning games Saturday, May 22. Sunday's game is at 1 p.m. Next weekend is the last weekend of the regular season and Ball State hosts Miami.
