Women’s Tennis Streak Snapped At Toledo; Cardinals to Learn NCAA Tournament Destination Monday
May 02, 2021 | Women's Tennis
TOLEDO, Ohio - In a match that went down to the wire on the final court, the Ball State women's tennis team (22-3, 13-1 MAC) suffered a streak-snapping 4-3 loss against Toledo (15-7, 11-3 MAC) Sunday afternoon at the UT Varsity Courts.
It was the first loss for the Cardinals since Jan. 29. Since then, Ball State had won 22 straight matches. The Rockets' victory in the final regular season match also prevented the MAC champion Cardinals from closing out a perfect conference slate.
Still, Ball State had already locked up the league title last weekend, securing the automatic bid to this week's NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals will find out their seeding, opponent and destination Monday at 6 p.m. The selection show will stream live on NCAA.com.
Ball State opened Sunday's match strong, posting wins on courts one and three, respectively to take the doubles point from the Rockets. Jessica Braun and Mariya Polishchuk clinched the doubles point with their 6-1 win on court three over Toledo's Ava McQuillin and Julia Kuszynski.
BSU got off to a fast start in singles, as well. The Cardinals quickly pushed their lead to 3-0 after posting wins on courts three and six. Polishchuk was the first off the court as she defeated the Rockets' Diana Lukyanova, 6-0, 6-1 at position three. Livia Lukacs wasn't too far behind Polishchuk, registering a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Toledo's No. 6 singles player McQuillin.
Ball State was up 3-0 when the Rockets began fighting back, taking courts five, one and four from Ball State to knot the match at three apiece.
The match winner would come down to court two where Braun and Sloane Teske were in a three-set thriller. Unfortunately, Teske would take the third frame from Braun by a score of 6-2 to clinch the match for the Rockets.
