Three in Top 10 Lead Men’s Golf to Third at MAC Championships
May 01, 2021 | Men's Golf
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team battled to a third place finish on another tough scoring day in the MAC Championships at Sycamore Hills.
The Cardinals put three players in the top 10 on the final leaderboard, one of whom – Joey Ranieri – was in contention for individual championship until the closing holes of Saturday's grueling final round.
Ball State entered the day eight shots back with hopes of chasing down Kent State. But the Golden Flashes pulled away as the round went along to win by 13 shots over Northern Illinois. The Huskies grabbed second, but Ball State edged Miami for third.
CJ Jones and Joey Wiseman led Ball State with scores of 76 with winds gusting again Saturday. Sterling McIlravy's 77 and Ranieri's 78 were the team's other counting scores in the final round.
Ranieri started the day one shot off the individual lead and trailed by the same margin after Saturday's opening nine holes. After falling four shots off the pace, he pulled within two again after a key birdie at the par-3 14th hole. He dueled with the leaders in the final group all day before ultimately finishing sixth.
Jones, who improved by one shot each round this weekend, worked his way up into a tie for eighth place for his second career MAC Championships top 10. Wiseman, competing in his first conference tournament, tied for 10th after a steady week on the same course where his brother Timothy finished in the top 10 three years ago.
Kent State's Chris Vandette, playing in the final group with Ranieri, won medalist honors by a single stroke at 10 over par. Ranieri ended the day three shots behind him. The average round for the field over the three rounds was 79.02, just more than seven shots over par.
Saturday's action put a wrap on this COVID-shortened season for the Cardinals, although Ball State will serve as the host institution for the NCAA Noblesville Regional later this month at The Sagamore Club.
