Following a sweep over Butler, the Ball State baseball team heads to Akron for a 4-game set this weekend. It's only league play from here on out for BSU, which currently stands tied for second in the MAC standings.
Â
The Cardinals will roll with the three-headed best of John Baker, Chayce McDermott and Lukas Jaksich again this weekend, a trio that combines for a 9-3 record. At the plate, the Cards have scored 41 runs over the last four games and now have four players slugging .452 or better. BSU is 6-1 with a +25 run differential over its last seven games, with four of those wins coming by at least five runs.
Â
Adam Tellier has emerged as a starter in his first full season and is batting a team-best .400 while leading team in runs (19) and stolen bases (8). Ross Messina is batting .318 and is tied for the team lead with nine XBH.
Â
Akron, in its second season of a varsity baseball reboot, is currently in last place and has lost its last nine games by a total margin of 55 runs.Â
Â
What To Know For This WeekendÂ
-- Nick Powell might be the hottest Cardinal in the lineup. The usual leftfielder went 7-for-12 with two triples and two homers and scored five runs in the series last weekend. He was hitting .184 on March 20 but has packed on 98 points to the average by going 13-for-33 since then.Â
-- Ross Messina, a 2nd team All-MAC player in 2019, hit a clutch 3-run homer last Friday at Butler. The game was 3-2 in the 8th when Messina put the game away. He then added two hits in each of Saturday's games.
Â
-- Ty Johnson recorded his best college outing last Friday at Butler. The tall righty from Indianapolis relieved John Baker and threw 4.1 shutout innings with six strikeouts. Johnson owns an 18-6 stirkeout-walk ratio and a 2-1 record so far this year.
