Soccer's Streak Snapped at Western Michigan
April 04, 2021 | Soccer
Cardinals continue to control their destiny in the division race
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Ball State soccer team saw its four-game unbeaten streak snapped Sunday with a 2-0 loss at Western Michigan.
The Cardinals dropped to 4-2-1 on the season, falling out of first place in the MAC West Division, but they remain in control of their own destiny for the division title. Western Michigan improved to 4-2-2.
A pair of set pieces led to both Western Michigan goals Sunday. Emily Dahl scored the first in the 30th minute on a rebound after Maitane Bravo saved the initial play off WMU's lone corner kick of the game. Hannah Redoute scored the second in the 61st minute after a long free kick into the box.
The Cardinals generated 10 corner kicks of their own but -- like in the scoreless draw between these teams last month when they had 12 of them -- could not score.
Ball State had some chances, especially with pressure early in the game. Shelby Kean hit a rocket off the crossbar from the top of the box in the 37th minute. Jenna Dombrowski had a look in the closing seconds of regulation that sailed just high.
But the Cardinals could not find the equalizer, and then Redoute's goal made the task even tougher over the closing third of the game.
Ball State now enters what is scheduled to be the final week of the regular season. The Cardinals visit Northern Illinois on Thursday and then host Eastern Michigan on Sunday. EMU currently leads the division at 6-2-0 and is not slated to play again until Sunday's match.
