FH Extends Win Streak To Three With Dominating Win Over Bellarmine
April 03, 2021 | Field Hockey
Â
The Cardinals (5-5) turned in another in dominating effort Saturday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex with a 3-1 victory over Bellarmine.
Â
Since the arrival of third-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal, the Cardinals have consistently improved and are driving towards the goal of rebuilding a historic program that has been very successful in years past in the Mid-American Conference.Â
"We put together a good weekend of hockey," said Bernthal. "Bellarmine is very strong defensively and played another great game. We moved the ball, possessed, and built up our attack to challenge them. These are areas of the game that we've been building for years— it's so fun to see the pieces coming together. Our shooting ignited this weekend and that's something we will look to continue for the rest of this season. Bottom line is this team is a blast to coach, is tough as nails, and grows every day. I am so proud of EVERY one of them."
Like yesterday, Ball State dominated on both sides of the field, especially on offense after outshooting the Knights (0-8) by a 34-5 margin, including 19 shots on goal.Â
The Knights came out strong, scoring the first goal of the day in the opening minutes of the first period after a sly move from Amber Hofenk Jerembo.Â
Â
Shortly after, Ball State's Kerriane McClay answered, registering the first goal of her career after the dish from teammate Maureen Donegan at the 7:02 mark.
Â
In a total team effort, the Cardinals found the back of the cage again at the 7:02 mark after Jenna McKune found Michaela Graney for a quick shot up the middle.
Â
Although the score does not reflect it, today's game was an aggressive competition. Ball State took 12 penalty corners along with one penalty stroke where the Cardinals scored their third and final goal thanks to Rachel Pereira. It was Pereira's fourth score of the season and 11th goal of her career
Â
The Ball State field hockey team will now travel next weekend for two Mid-American Conference games at Bernthal's alma mater, Kent State. Both games on Friday and Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
