Cardinals tee it up Friday morning at Sycamore Hills
It hasn't been the spring the Ball State men's golf team hoped for, but the Cardinals have their biggest opportunity yet to make it a memorable one.
Ball State tees it up this weekend in the MAC Championships with the action beginning Friday morning at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne.
The event was slated to be held at Sycamore last spring before the sports calendar was put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic. One year later, the Cardinals are eager to have another chance to compete for a championship.
Ball State nearly won a MAC title at this same site three years ago. The Cardinals held the lead into the final round that year before giving way to perennial favorite Kent State down the stretch.
One member of the lineup from that week will be there for Ball State again this time around. Jack Cunningham, a freshman then, is a senior now and one of six players the Cardinals are taking to Sycamore Hills. Starting with the championship two years ago, teams can bring six players and are permitted to substitute between rounds.
Cunningham is joined by Joey Ranieri, CJ Jones, Tyler Green, Joey Wiseman and Sterling McIlravy. Ranieri leads the squad this year with a 74.58 scoring average, while Jones tied for third the last time the MAC Championships were contested in 2019 at Club Waldon.
Ball State enters this week's tournament rated fourth among the eight teams in the league. Kent State, ranked 42nd nationally, leads the way. The Golden Flashes tied with Eastern Michigan for the title in 2019 and have won each of the past four.
Sycamore Hills proved to be a tough track when it hosted in 2018. The winning score that year was 44 over par for 72 holes. This year's event is only 54 holes with two rounds Friday and the final round Saturday.
