Women’s Golf Carrying Momentum into MAC Championships
April 22, 2021 | Women's Golf
Cardinals looking to build on this spring’s success this weekend at Silver Lake
If momentum is an indicator, the Ball State women's golf team is in good position heading into this weekend's MAC Championships.
The Cardinals comfortably defeated a field heavy on MAC teams in their last outing to win Bowling Green's Dolores Black Falcon Invitational by 10 strokes.
They beat seven of the nine teams they will see this weekend at Silver Lake Country Club in Stow, Ohio. The only MAC teams not in that field at Bowling Green were Northern Illinois and perennial league favorite Kent State.
BSU will look to build on that success when the league championships get underway Friday with 36 holes at Silver Lake. The final 18 holes will be played Saturday.
Ball State has had a quality spring in this shortened season, including the team's school-record performance a month ago at the Spring Break Shootout. Junior Hadley Moritz and senior Liz Kim have led the way. Their scoring averages of 75.07 and 75.29, respectively, would rank among the top 5 single seasons in program history.
They are joined the lineup by juniors Morgan Lewis and Elizabeth Amendola and freshman Kiah Parrott. Lewis provides another veteran presence as a player who has competed in every event over her first three years, while Amendola has gained some experience with a pair of starts this season, including in last week's victory at Stone Ridge Golf Club.
Parrott has had one of the top rookie seasons in the league. Her 76.14 scoring average is on pace to be the best ever for a BSU freshman.
Ball State is eager to compete this weekend in an event that was wiped away last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kim, Moritz and Lewis were all in the lineup two years ago when the Cardinals finished fourth at Purgatory in Noblesville for their best MAC result since 2013.
That trio also has some experience at Silver Lake, having played an event there in the fall of 2019. Kim led the way that week with a tie for ninth, as the Cardinals finished third as a team.
Moritz was the team's top finisher in the most recent MAC Championships with a tie for 11th at Purgatory and is coming off a sixth-place result to lead the way last week at the Falcon Invite. She and Kim have both finished in the top 25 in four of five tournaments this spring.
The Cardinals and every other team in the field this weekend are hoping to chase down Kent State. The Golden Flashes have won all 21 previous MAC Championships and enter this year's tournament as the 13th-ranked team in the country.
