Field Hockey Loses Defensive Fight At CMU
April 17, 2021 | Field Hockey
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - - Despite another valiant effort on defense, the Ball State field hockey team suffered a 1-0 setback to Central Michigan Saturday afternoon at Cristy Freese Field.
The Cardinals (5-8, 3-6 MAC) suffered a third straight road setback against a hungry Chippewas (5-3, 3-2 MAC) squad which had not played a game since March 27.
The first 30 minutes of action was back-and-forth with both teams taking their shots at scoring. Ball State had two attempts on goal off of five shots, while Central Michigan had four shots, two of which were saved in a scoreless first half.
Unfortunately, the Chippewas' Kate Biglin snuck one by Ball State's defense for the game's lone goal at the 33:47 mark of the third quarter. After that, the Cardinals were able to hold off the Chippewas the remainder of the competition.
Offensively, the Cardinals played well in the circle by presenting and creating great scoring opportunities, ending the contest with a game-high eight total shots. Three of the shots were on goal, and the Cardinals were able to generate three corners. Unfortunately, BSU could not capitalize on those chances in the loss.
The Cardinals were led offensively by Maureen Donegan's three total shots and Emma Hilton's two shots on goal. In the cage, sophomore goalie Wietske Overdijkink ended the day with two saves.
The Ball State field hockey team will close its four-game road swing Sunday at Central Michigan. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET at Cristy Freese Field.
