Women’s Tennis Wins 18th-Straight With Win Over EMU
April 16, 2021 | Women's Tennis
The Cardinals remain undefeated in Mid-American Conference action with a 9-0 record
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team continues to make program history under the direction of eighth-year head coach Max Norris, winning their 18th-straight match along with remaining undefeated in Mid-American Conference action.
After losing the doubles point, the Cardinals (18-2, 9-0 MAC) came back in singles winning four-straight points to claim the 4-3 upset over Eastern Michigan (9-12, 1-8 MAC) Friday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
"Eastern Michigan came out ready to go," Norris said. "I did not have us prepared in doubles and they capitalized. Credit to them. We fought back really well in singles winning five of the six first sets and from there we closed the match out strong. I'm proud of our competitive toughness and we will use lessons from today to be better next match. Go cards!"
Sophomore Emma Peeler, who recently was named the MAC Singles Player of The Week, only gave up three games on the top court in her 6-2, 6-1 take down over EMU's Isabelle Popma. Shortly after Peeler's win, veteran Rebecca Herrington breezed past Emma Lou-Pommiers, 6-0, 6-4 to give BSU its first lead of the match (1-0).
After that, the Cardinals lead escalated quickly (3-1) when junior Livia Lukacs beat her opponent at the No. 6 position in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Today's game-winner would come from Ball State's No. 5 singles player, Silvia Martinez, as the true freshman swept (6-0, 6-0) the Eagles Julia Piatek for BSU's match point.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action when it hosts Buffalo on Sunday, April 18. If played outdoors at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center the match will begin at Noon. If inclement weather were to occur, first serve will be at 1 p.m. ET indoors at the Northwest YMCA.
