Softball’s Rally Attempt Falls Short Thursday at UAB
March 11, 2021 | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - If there is one thing teams know scouting the Ball State softball program, it's the word quit is not in the team's vocabulary.
After falling being 6-0 to host UAB on the opening day of the 2021 Blazer Classic, the Cardinals (5-6) brought the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the sixth inning Thursday night. Unfortunately, a well-timed strikeout capped Ball State's rally to three runs and helped the Blazers (10-9) escape with a 6-3 victory at Mary Bowers Field.
UAB jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and two more in the second. After a pair of scoreless innings, they extended their lead to 6-0 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
But, after being limited to just a first-inning single from senior left fielder Haley Dominique, the Cardinals offense busted out in the top of the sixth.
The three-run rally started with a one-out infield single by senior pinch hitter Gabby Magnifico. Freshman shortstop Kayla Lissy was able to reach base on an error on the next play, giving the Cardinals runners at first and second.
After the second out of the inning, senior center fielder Kennedy Wynn blasted an RBI single to center field giving Ball State its first run of the game. Senior designated player Janae Hogg then took advantage of a double steal by Lissy and Wynn with a two-run single to center field.
Unfortunately, the rally stopped at those three runs as UAB's Olivia Valbak walked BSU's leading slugger junior right fielder Faith Hensley before ending the inning with a strikeout. She also retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh to earn the save.
Junior Tieghan Morio suffered the loss for the Cardinals, allowing two hits and three runs, only two of which were earned, in the first inning. Senior Darcie Huber threw the final 5.0 innings, striking out three, while surrendering only three hits and three runs.
Ball State continues play in the Blazer Classic Friday with games versus Samford (Noon ET / 11 a.m. CT) and Southern Illinois (2:30 p.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. CT).
The Bulldogs are 7-9 on the year, with a pair of wins over Jacksonville State who the Cardinals defeated Tuesday. The Salukis are a perfect 14-0, including a 6-1 win over Ball State on Feb. 27 at the Coach B Classic hosted by SIU.
