McDermott, Peltier Earn Weekly Awards
March 30, 2021 | Baseball
After standout performances in a series win over the weekend, Ball State pitcher Chayce McDermott and third baseman Ryan Peltier earned conference and national notice. McDermott was named NCBWA Pitcher of the Week and MAC Pitcher of the Week, while Peltier was selected MAC Player of the Week.
McDermott tied his career high for strikeouts and did it without walking a batter in a seven-inning, complete game victory in game two of the Cardinals' weekend series. The Anderson, Indiana, product fanned nine consecutive Toledo batters at one point, marking the second time this season he has recorded nine straight outs via strikeout. He previously did it at Kentucky.
Â
McDermott allowed a solo home run in the first inning Saturday and then shut Toledo out the rest of the way in Ball State's 7-1 victory. Through two MAC starts, he is 2-0 with 24 strikeouts in 12.0 innings of work.
His performance last Saturday also earned national attention, as he was voted national pitcher of the week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was recognized alongside Clemson's Caden Grice, who was the NCBWA Hitter of the Week.
Peltier, hit .467 and slugged .800 with six RBIs over the weekend. He came up especially big in Sunday's 8-7, series-clinching win, driving in four runs on a pair of doubles. The second of those doubles tied the game after Toledo had scored five unanswered runs. Peltier also homered and drove in two runs in the Cardinals' game two victory. He collected at least one hit in all four games, including a 3-for-4 day in the series finale. Peltier now owns a six-game hitting streak heading into this weekend's games.
This week marks the second straight week and the third time this season a BSU pitcher has won the conference's weekly award. John Baker collected the previous two awards.
Ball State will take on Butler this weekend in a three-game non-conference series. It's the last non-conference set of games left this season.Â
