MVB Bids Farewell To Its Seniors & Joel Walton
March 27, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Despite the outcome of Saturday night's match against Loyola it was still a historical moment in Worthen Arena as the Cardinals said good-bye to longtime head coach Joel Walton and their four seniors.
Before the first serve, Ball State recognized current seniors Ben Chinnici, Ryan Dorgan, Nick LaVanchy and Blake Reardon along with Matt Szews and Nate Amos who returned from last season's squad because they did not get the proper farewell due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Sadly, the Cardinals also had to bid farewell to Walton for his 23 years at the helm of the Ball State men's volleyball program. Walton had announced his retirement prior to the start of the 2021 season.
After the match, Walton said his career at Ball State has really been the fulfillment of a dream to have played at Ball State and then have the opportunity to coach for his alma mater. He said it has been an incredible honor to have been a part of such a storied program that has produced some amazing coaches along with some unbelievable players and athletes.
Ball State (10-6, 7-4 MIVA) knew it was going to be a tough task to take Loyola (13-3, 9-3 MIVA) down tonight and unfortunately despite the Cardinals efforts the Wolves would again come out on top in the second match of a two-game series after posting a 3-1 victory over BSU.
Things started off very bleak for the Cardinals after dropping sets one (25-17) and two (25-23) to Loyola.
Ball State then started chirping their way back into the match in the third frame as BSU would have the advantage over the Wolves for almost the entire set. A Kaleb Jenness kill would give Ball State set point over Loyola (25-19).
Ball State and Loyola played neck and neck in the final stanza and even though the Cardinals had a few opportunities to possibly send the match into an extra period the Wolves sealed their fate by taking set four, 25-23.
Reardon performed the way a senior would in his last regular season match on his home court, leading Ball State offensively and defensively with 20 kills and 19 digs. Jenness also reach double figures in kills with 12 and Bryce Behrendt came in second in digs with 10.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will close out its MIVA regular season on the road at McKendree next weekend (April 2-3). First serve for Friday's match is at 8:30 p.m. ET while Saturday's match will start at 8 p.m. ET.
