Men’s Volleyball Outlasts Rival Ohio State In Five Sets
March 11, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
COLUMBUS, Ohio - It was like Déjà vu tonight against the Buckeyes but this time the Cardinals came out on top over Ohio State, winning the match in five sets at the Covelli Center.
Less than two weeks ago, Ohio State (5-7, 4-4 MIVA) pulled off the five-set thriller over Ball State (8-4, 5-3 MIVA) on Feb. 27 in Worthen Arena. But tonight, the Cardinals returned the favor after a tenacious display on offense.
Junior outside attacker Kaleb Jenness led the BSU charge with a season best 21 kills off of 44 swings for a .318 hitting percentage. Six other Cardinals recorded kills on the night as well with graduate senior outside attacker Blake Reardon coming in second with 15.
Senior setter Quinn Isaacson also had a strong performance at the net after dishing out a game high 54 assists while also leading his squad defensively with 10 digs.
The last time these two rivals met, Ball State head volleyball coach Joel Walton said after that match that his team had struggled all night long on offense and Ohio State was just more consistent in that category.
Ball State turned that page tonight with a 66-kill performance off of 147 attempts for a team hitting percentage of .306.
Defense also played a big role in the Cardinals defeat over the Buckeyes. BSU held Ohio State to a .287 hitting percentage compared to the last time these two schools' met when Ohio State ended that match with a .341 attack percentage.
Even though Ohio State took set one from the Cardinals, 25-23 that didn't seem to faze BSU.
The Cardinals rebounded quickly to take frames two and three from the Buckeyes. Ball State was in the driver's seat and led throughout the fourth set but like any rival match it came to no surprise the Buckeyes would send the competition into an extra period.
In set five, Ball State jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage and pretty much never looked back. Of course, the Buckeyes would come close, but the Cardinals kept their composure to seal the win.
The Ball State men's volleyball team continues its five-match road swing when it travels to Quincy University on March 19 for an 8 p.m. ET first serve.
