Behind Jenness’ 19 Kills Men’s Volleyball Gets The 3-0 Sweep Over Lindenwood
February 20, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
With the win, the Cardinals extend their win streak to six and remain undefeated in MIVA action
MUNCIE, Ind. - It had been two weeks since the Cardinals had competed and it showed in the first set, as head coach Joel Walton said after the match that his team started out a bit sluggish tonight.
But BSU (6-1, 3-0 MIVA) was able to get out of its slump quickly and earn the 3-0 sweep over Lindenwood (3-5, 0-5 MIVA) Saturday night in Worthen Arena.
With the win, Ball State has extended its win streak to six. The Cardinals also remain undefeated at home and in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) action.
Preseason All-MIVA selection junior outside attacker Kaleb Jenness, proved himself of that honor tonight, leading BSU with a season best 19 kills. Jenness' accuracy was also on point with a .441 hitting percentage.
Today's match wasn't easy, as the Cardinals struggled to find their rhythm in the first set. It had been an up and down affair the entire first frame with the match knotted late at 18 apiece.
Lindenwood committed two attack errors along with a bad serve into the net that helped BSU take the upper hand (22-18).
The Lions would tie the set one more time, 23-23 but back-to-back kills from Jenness would allow BSU to come out on top, 25-23.
After that, Walton said he thought the guys did a nice job adjusting and that they did. The Cardinals dominated the second set early on and never looked back. BSU was on point on both sides of the net to take the second frame from Lindenwood by a score of 25-13.
The Cardinals were a bit confused in game three because Lindenwood had turned in the wrong lineup. Due to the Lions mishap, Walton said it took BSU a little more time to adjust.
Ball State never trailed in the third set although Lindenwood would tie the third game several times.
The Cardinals took a late 22-18 edge over the Lions to put BSU in a good position to not only win the third stanza but also to claim tonight's victory.
So naturally, the Cardinals looked to their upperclassmen, graduate senior Blake Reardon and Jenness to lock up the victory and that they did by ending the night with back-to-back kills.
The Ball State men's volleyball team continues its two-game MIVA series against Lindenwood Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Worthen Arena.
