February 19, 2021 | Men's Golf, Women's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State swept the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week awards with diver Caitlin Locante taking the honor on the women's side and golfer Tyler Green on the men's.
Locante, a senior elementary education major with a 3.84 GPA, followed her school-record performance from Jan. 16 with another stellar performance, sweeping the 1M and 3M boards Feb. 12 at Miami to help the Cardinals to a near upset of the RedHawks in their home pool.
Locante's score of 296.25 on the 1-meter board was the best of her career, pushed her past the NCAA Zone Diving "A" cut mark of 295.00 and was the third-best individual effort in program history. The Brookfield, Wisconsin, product also solidly won the 3-meter competition with a score of 314.25 points, which is just shy of her program-record and NCAA Zone Diving "B" cut mark of 323.625 set Jan. 16 versus UIndy.
Green, a redshirt senior general studies major with a 3.29 GPA, posted a perfect 3-0 record at the No. 2 spot in the lineup at the season-opening Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Florida.
Green clinched all three of his matches before reaching the final hole. His victory margins were more impressive each round, as he defeated Evansville's Spencer Wagner, 2&1, Drake's Shayne Patel, 3&2, and DePaul's Noah Kolar, 4&3. The Columbia City, Indiana, product led Ball State to a 2-1-0 record as a team and a tie for second place for the week. He was also named the MAC Men's Golfer of the Week.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to MAC student-athletes who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and perform well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
