Men’s Swimming & Diving Picks Up Five Event Wins vs. Miami
October 28, 2021 | Men's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The first dual meet test of the 2021-22 season for the Ball State men's swimming & diving program was not an easy one Thursday night at the Lewellen Aquatic Center, as the Cardinals battled defending Mid-American Champion Miami.
Going against the league's top program did not deter BSU's student-athletes, however, as the put together several solid performances and went on to win five of the 16 total events.
"I think everybody was excited to race Miami," head coach J. Agnew said after the meet. "We know we're making up ground, we know we're getting better. We wanted to compare ourselves against the best in the conference and we did that today. We were hungry, we were fighting, we were scratching, we were clawing, and we were racing hard today, it was awesome."
The first event win came from sophomore Joey Garberick when he took top billing in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.67. The reigning MAC individual champion in the event, Garberick won by 1.17.
Garberick nearly pulled off the breaststroke sweep, taking second in the 200 in 2:06.17, just .17 behind the winner.
In the freestyle sprints, it was junior Owen Chaye who would turn in a solid performance, winning the 50 free in 21.13, while taking second in the 100 free in 47.23. His 100 free time was just .22 off the winner.
Ball State's final event win in the pool came in the 100 butterfly, with junior Bryce Handshoe clocking in at 50.39. The time was 1.20 ahead of second place.
"We talked about it before this meet that we can win these races," Agnew said. "Our guys came in here believing they could win some races and help move this program forward. To have three different guys picking spots and getting wins, I just think it speaks a lot to how far this team has come, not just as individuals but as a team."
As impressive as the Cardinals were in the pool Thursday night, they were just strong in the diving well. In fact, junior Wyatt Blake hit an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score on the 1m board, winning the event with a score of 320.10. Senior Hunter Ongay also picked up his first event win of the season, taking first on the 3m board with a mark of 303.83.
"Our divers have been fantastic," Agnew said. "That's a pretty driven group. Wyatt has been on fire this season and I think it really started with a recommitment this summer to be the best he can be. We've just seen it pay dividends week in and week out. For him to get a zone cut tonight, we're just so excited for him. Hunter is doing a fantastic job. For him to get back up with just a couple days practice after an injury and dive as well as he did, that just speaks to the professional approach he takes to his job."
While the Cardinals ended up losing the meet 185-113, it was a 40-point improvement from last season's showdown which the RedHawks won by a score of 219-73 on March 6.
Ball State's swimmers will have a quick turnaround, as the squad travels to Eastern Illinois for a 5 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. CT showdown with the Panthers tomorrow. The women's squad will also be in action for their first of back-to-back meets.
"I think tomorrow will be a toughness check for our team," Agnew concluded. "We had a big meet tonight, they were fired up and amped up, and we're going to go home, get some sleep, take a four-hour bus ride, and show up race our butts off. It's usually a very competitive meet with Eastern Illinois and I know we're really excited about this challenge. We talk about racing anybody, any place, any time, and these guys will be ready to race."
Following Friday's meet, the women's squad will host Ohio for an 11 a.m. contest at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. As a reminder to fans, in keeping with updated guidance from the CDC, all Ball State spectators must wear a mask while inside any University building. This includes required masking swimming & diving events held inside the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
