Ball State runs 6k race at 12 p.m.
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State cross country team is set to its postseason run as it hits the course Saturday for the Mid-American Conference Championship in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The 6k race is slated to begin at 12 p.m. ET at Eagle Crest Golf Club.
The Cardinals fly into the race ranked 12th in the Great Lakes Region – their highest regional ranking in program history – and are one of four MAC teams ranked, joining Toledo (fifth), Miami (10th) and Akron (11th) in the weekly U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings.
Ball State finished fifth in last year's meet marking the highest finish in the annual race since 2007 and has gotten better in each race this season.
"If we compete how we've been competing and run within ourselves, we're going to be in the top half," Cardinals head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "During championship time, teams try to do things that they may not be, but we just want to be consistent in what we're doing. If we do that, we're going to be in a position where we're going to be proud of this program."
After the first three meets of the season were 5k races, Ball State ran its first 6k event of the 2021 campaign two weeks ago at the Bradley Pink Classic, competing with some of the top programs in the country and finishing 14th out of 37 teams.
According to Wheatley, the Cardinals are well positioned to perform at a high level Saturday afternoon.
"We have the pieces here that can put together a pretty good performance. We just need to do what we've done, week in and week out, and run within ourselves."
