Hilton's Goal Not Enough In Loss To No. 6 Northwestern
October 10, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team has played one of the toughest non-conference schedules this season and today was no exception as the Cardinals competed against their fifth Big Ten opponent and third top-25 team Sunday when BSU fell 6-1 to No. 6 Northwestern at the Briner Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 4-9 overall while the Wildcats improve to 10-4 for the season.
The highlight of today's contest came in the final stanza at the 49:04 mark when sophomore Emma Hilton found the back of the cage off the assist from freshman Augostina Giudice. The goal marked Hilton's first score of the season and second for her career.
Defensively, sophomore goalie Hannah Johnston's collected 20 saves which ranks the second most in the NCAA single-game records for the season.
Ball State's defense held the Wildcats to only one goal in the second half but unfortunately Northwestern's offense was unstoppable in the first 30 minutes of action as the Wildcats had built a 5-0 edge over the Cardinals at intermission.
The Ball State field hockey team returns to Mid-American Conference action on Friday, Oct. 15 when the Cardinals host the Bellarmine Knights at the Briner Sports Complex. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. ET start. Ball State will also pay tribute to its seniors prior to the contest.
