Peeler Nearly Nips Ranked Opponent as Women’s Tennis Falls to Irish
January 29, 2021 | Women's Tennis
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame dealt the Ball State women's tennis team a 7-0 loss Friday afternoon but not without a fight at several positions in the lineup.
BSU sophomore Emma Peeler came within a few points of knocking off Notre Dame No. 1 singles player Cameron Corse, one of the nation's top 125 players in the Oracle/ITA rankings. Peeler won 10 total games to Corse's eight and took the second set by two breaks before falling just short in a 10-7 match tiebreaker.
The Cardinals (0-2) also had their moments at No. 4 singles -- where Amy Kaplan forced a second-set tiebreaker against Julia Andreach -- and at No. 3 singles -- where Jessica Braun played a close, 6-4 second set against Ally Bojczuk.
Like Peeler, Kaplan and Braun are both sophomores for a Ball State team whose lineup Friday featured first- or second-year players at five of the six singles spots.
Notre Dame (3-2) won the remaining singles matches in straight sets and also swept the doubles matches to claim the opening point of the afternoon. At the top doubles spot, Peeler and Braun hung tough for Ball State in a 6-3 loss to nation's 19th-ranked tandem of Corse and Page Freeman.
The Irish program was ranked 25th in the Oracle/ITA rankings last spring when the 2020 season was cut short by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ball State now returns to Muncie for its home opener Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against Valparaiso on the indoor courts at Muncie's Northwest YMCA.
