Ivy McKee says that after running against her Ball State teammates in practice, the meets are the easy part.
"I'm competing against my teammates every day, and they may be the fastest in the MAC. We have a healthy competition here," McKee said. "We have a really good sprint team and our coaches are doing a good job of making sure our goals are there."
She would know - she currently owns the conference's second-fastest mark in the 200m run and practicing every day with her teammates is the best way to push toward a conference championship. McKee placed second in both the 200m and 60m in the opener at Bowling Green. Kayla Jones and Alexis Thigpen went 1-2 in the 800m as BSU shook off the rust of having not competed in 11 months. The positives were there, but head coach Brian Etelman now knows that there's another step for the team to take.
"All of our event groups did a great job in the first meet. But nobody was perfect," Etelman said. "We weren't quite full strength, but we're pretty close to that now. We are more comfortable and confident and in training everyone has been lights out."
Another step comes with a fuller roster available this weekend. Etelman says this team "is deep and talented with no holes" and the Cardinals are excited to compete and see the results they've come to expect.
"I like the dynamic on our team. We root for each other," McKee said. "I want to win, but I want my teammates to win just as bad. I really like that about our team. I like how passionate we are and how hard we work at practice. It's nice to be on a team where everybody works hard."
All of the Cardinals have worked hard to get their entire roster on the track, and this weekend in Bowling Green they hope to see the results.
"I think people will be pretty impressed with what they see this weekend. We're ready to roll," Etelman said.
