Carley Shannon Named Head Field Hockey Coach at Hood College
June 10, 2020 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – Carley Shannon, who spent the previous two years as the Ball State field hockey team's volunteer coach, has been named the head coach at Hood College in Maryland.
Shannon, a native of Williamsburg, Virginia, played collegiate field hockey at Ball State from 2014-17. The midfielder started 68 games over four years as a Cardinal and also served as a team captain. In her senior campaign, Shannon led the team in points, which included two game-winning goals, on the way to earning all-league accolades.
Following graduation, Shannon stepped into the coaching ranks as Ball State's volunteer coach in 2018 and 2019. She helped BSU improve its Mid-American Conference win total each year. The Cardinals were particularly stingy on the defensive side of the field as they ranked second nationally in defensive saves this past fall.
"Carley has been a gift to the Ball State Field Hockey program," head coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "I will always be grateful that she was willing to stay on as a coach when I first got to Ball State. She is wise beyond her years and helped me really understand the players and team I was joining.
"She has been involved in every aspect of the program for the last two years and is ready to take reign of her own program," Bernthal added. "She is an excellent mentor and leader. We are ecstatic for her and the Hood field hockey program."
Hood College is a member of the NCAA Division III ranks and competes in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
