Mallers Earns Academic All-MAC Honor for Third Straight Year
April 08, 2020 | Men's Basketball
Senior forward with 4.0 GPA in MBA program started all 31 games as a senior
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State senior forward Kyle Mallers was named to the Academic All-MAC men's basketball team for the third consecutive season.
Â
Mallers graduated in just three years with a degree in finance and began pursuing his master's degree during his senior campaign. He currently owns a 4.0 GPA in Ball State's MBA program.
Â
A two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete award winner, the Fort Wayne native is now eligible for that honor for a third time, as well. The Distinguished Scholar Athlete list will be announced later this spring.
Â
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year are not eligible.
Â
Mallers started all 31 games this season, averaging 9.5 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range and 86.4 percent from the free throw line. He tied the program's single-game record with eight 3-pointers in the win over Howard, hitting 8-of-10 from beyond the arc on his way to a career-high 24 points.
Â
Mallers, who never missed a game in his career, finished eighth on Ball State's all-time 3-pointers list with 158. His 130 career games played rank second in school history behind only former teammate Trey Moses (132). He would have had a chance to break the record if the postseason had not been canceled because of COVID-19.
Â
Ball State ended the season 18-13 overall and shared the MAC West Division championship at 11-7 in conference play. The Cardinals entered the league tournament as the No. 3 seed before play was canceled. BSU owns division titles in three of the past five seasons, including Mallers' freshman and senior campaigns.
