December 13, 2025 | Men's Basketball
The Ball State men's basketball returns to the road to play at Campbell on Sunday afternoon in the final game away from Muncie in December.
The contest at Gilbert Craig Gore Arena is set to begin at 2 p.m., and will be streamed on FloSports. Mick Tidrow and David Eha handle the radio call on WMUN 92.5 FM / 1340 AM and on the WMUN app. Links to both broadcasts and live stats can be found above and on the schedule page.
Ball State (3-7) had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final minute but fell 68-64 to South Dakota State on Tuesday night at home in its most recent contest. Joey Hart tallied a game-high 18 points in his first start of the season for the Cardinals.
Campbell (4-5) beat Virginia Lynchburg 149-62 last Sunday after falling 87-76 the previous Tuesday at Penn State. The Camels have faced a common opponent to the Cardinals in Wisconsin, who beat Campbell 96-64 in the season opener on Nov. 3. Campbell beat Mid-American Conference member Western Michigan 91-82 at home on Nov. 9.
John Andrzejek is in his first season as the head coach at Campbell. The Camels were picked seventh in the 13-team Coastal Athletic Association preseason poll after finishing fifth in the 2024-25 CAA regular season standings with a 15-17 (10-8 CAA) record.
Campbell likes to get out and run, as it leads the league in fastbreak points (18.56 per game, No. 16 in NCAA Division I). The Camels are third in the CAA in scoring offense (84.4 points per game) and second in free throws made per game (19.6), rebounding margin (+9.7) and rebounds per game (41.3).
Graduate guard DJ Smith is third in the CAA and No. 44 nationally in scoring (19.4 points per game) as a high-volume 3-point shooter (league-high 76 attempts so far this season). Junior forward Chris Fields Jr. averages 13.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game and put up a 23-point, 12-rebound, 11-assist triple-double last Sunday.
Ball State will next begin MAC play on Saturday at home against Miami (OH).
TAR HEEL STATE FIRST: The Ball State men's basketball team is set to play a game in the state of North Carolina for the first time in program history.
The Cardinals have played eight different teams who hail from the Tar Heel State, but always at home or at a neutral site outside of North Carolina: Appalachian State (2-0), Campbell (1-0), Duke (0-1), Elon (1-0), North Carolina A&T (1-0), North Carolina Central (1-0), Western Carolina (1-0), and Winston-Salem (1-0).
ANOTHER CLASH WITH THE CAA: Sunday's game at Campbell will be Ball State's second of the season against an opponent from the Coastal Athletic Association after playing Monmouth on Nov. 28.
Ball State's last game against a team from North Carolina was Nov. 18, 2018 against Appalachian State. The Cardinals won 94-86 at the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C.
HART AND HUSTLE: Junior Joey Hart posted a game-high 18 points on Tuesday night against South Dakota State in his first start of the season.
The guard needed only nine field goal attempts on the night to reach the 18 points and also contributed three rebounds and an assist in his home season debut. Hart played eight minutes at Evansville the previous Wednesday in his season debut.
DOUBLE DIGIT STEALS: Ball State collected 10 steals on Tuesday against South Dakota State, making it the fourth time this season the Cardinals have had 10+ steals in a game.
Ball State also had double figures in that category against Mansfield (11) and Little Rock (10) in November and on Dec. 3 at Evansville. This is the first time since the 2019-20 season that the Cardinals have had four non-conference games with 10+ steals.
COPELAND BACK IN CAROLINA: Freshman Preston Copeland returns to his home state of North Carolina as the Cardinals take on the Camels. Copeland's hometown of Clayton is about a 45-minute drive from Sunday's game in Buies Creek.
The forward grabbed 16 rebounds against Le Moyne on Nov. 30 to go along with 10 points for his first collegiate double-double. He became only the second freshman at Ball State since at least the 2009-10 season to record 15+ rebounds in a game (Payton Sparks with 16 on Jan. 14, 2022 vs Buffalo).
BIG GAME FROM MAXEY: Senior guard Juwan Maxey went 7-for-14 on 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 27 points in Ball State's 96-85 win over Le Moyne at the Lafayette Classic.
The Detroit native had the 16th game by a Ball State men's basketball player with at least seven triples. Maxey also added five assists in the contest.
PUTTING UP THE POINTS: The 96 points the Cardinals scored against Le Moyne were the most in a single game since the 2023-24 season opener against Goshen (101).
The offensive output was the highest for Ball State against an NCAA Division I opponent since a 97-75 victory over Indiana State on Nov. 27, 2021.
BALANCED BOX SCORES: Ball State has six players averaging between 7 and 12 points per game: Davion Hill (11.5), Armoni Zeigler (10.5), Hart (10.5), Maxey (8.2), Devon Barnes (8.0), and Elmore James IV (7.1).
Five Cardinals are between 4 and 5 rebounds per contest: Mason Jones (4.8), Copeland (4.7), Cam Denson (4.3), Hill (4.2), and Zeigler (4.2).
CARDINALS CLAMPING DOWN ON DEFENSE: Ball State is third in the Mid-American Conference in fewest fouls committed per game (15.7) and scoring defense (69.4 points per game) and fifth in steals per game (7.8) through the season's first 10 contests.
Junior forward Mason Jones is third in the league in total steals (21) and fourth in steals per game (2.1).
CAREER HIGHS FOR JONES: Mason Jones set career bests in 3-pointers made (three) and steals (four) on Nov. 11 at Wisconsin.
The Valparaiso, Ind., native tallied three of those steals in the first half and went 3-for-3 from distance in the second period. Jones followed that up with another four-steal performance on Nov. 22 at Indiana State.
TV GAME AT WORTHEN ARENA: The game against Ohio originally scheduled for Jan. 17 in Muncie has been moved to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16 due to it being aired on CBS Sports Network.
Ball State's most recent home MAC game on a Friday was back on March 3, 2023 against Toledo in a game that was also broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
WELCOME TO THE MAC: Ball State plays league newcomer UMass twice in the regular season in the first season in the league for the Minutemen.
The Cardinals play at UMass on Jan. 10 before hosting the Minutemen on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The two teams have faced off only once prior, in an 89-86 Ball State win on Nov. 21, 2021 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
