April 02, 2020 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite the season being cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association proceeded with its postseason awards Thursday and Ball State earned four selections with Kaleb Jenness on the First Team and Quinn Isaacson, Blake Reardon and Matt Szews on the Second Team.
Jenness earned All-MIVA honors for the second consecutive year after securing a spot on the All-Freshman Team in 2019. The sophomore had a huge season for the Cardinals with 246 kills, 13 assists, nine aces, 102 digs and 22 blocks. A native of South Carolina, Jenness had six matches with 20 or more kills in 2020, including a career high 26 at George Mason. Jenness earned MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors for recording 10 digs in wins against Ohio State and Sacred Heart in a single week.
Isaacson's play on both offense and defense landed him on the All-MIVA Second Team after leading the Cardinals in both assists and digs in 2020. The junior setter recorded 587 assists and 122 digs for the year to go along with an additional 26 kills, 13 service aces and 19 blocks. Isaacson recorded his career high 67 assists in Ball State's win over Loyola in Chicago for the program's first victory at LUC since 1999. The Illinois native tallied three matches with 50 assists or more and finished with double-digit digs on six occasions throughout the 2020 campaign.
Reardon was on track for a career year before the 2020 season's abrupt end. The senior completed the year with 163 kills, including a career high 26 in Ball State's historic win in Chicago. His best attacking season was in 2018 with 184 kills, which he was on pace to improve upon this year. Reardon recorded double-digit kills in seven matches and multiple service aces in three. The Illinois native polished off his 2020 stats with nine assists, 10 aces, 65 digs and 17 blocks.
No stranger to all-conference awards, senior Matt Szews garnered All-MIVA honors for the third time in his career. Szews was named Co-Freshman of the Year along with a First Team selection as a freshman, and also received First Team honors as a junior. Szews became Ball State's all-time leader in service aces during the rally-scoring era in 2020 and finished his career with 122. He finished 2020 with 159 kills, 10 assists, 17 aces, 73 digs and 27 blocks. Szews recorded a season high 18 kills at Cal State Northridge.
