Trio helped Cardinals to MAC West title, No. 3 seed in this week’s MAC Tournament
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State men's basketball team was well represented on the MAC's postseason awards list with Tahjai Teague on the all-conference first team and all-defensive team, Ishmael El-Amin on the third team and Jarron Coleman tabbed the league's freshman of the year.
Â
The MAC announced the awards Wednesday on the eve of the conference tournament in Cleveland. Ball State opens Thursday in the quarterfinals against Kent State at approximately 9 p.m. on ESPN+, 104.9 WERK FM and 96.7 Blake FM.Â
Â
Teague, a fifth-year senior from Indianapolis, became the first Ball State player named to the All-MAC First Team since Jarrod Jones in 2011. He averaged team highs of 14.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game in MAC play, leading the league in blocked shots per game (1.7) and ranking fourth in rebounding. He owns 12 double-doubles on the season, including eight in conference play, and a career-best 66 assists.
Â
Teague, who was named the MAC West Division Player of the Week a school-record six times this season, recently surpassed 1,500 points for his career. His 961 career rebounds rank seventh among all active Division I players. His proclivity for blocked shots and steals and his ability to guard every position on the floor led a BSU defensive effort that topped the MAC in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense and 3-point defense in conference play.

Â
El-Amin is having a breakout junior season, averaging 13.8 points and ranking fifth in the MAC at 39.3 percent from 3-point range. The guard from Minneapolis has connected on 77 3-pointers to rank third on the Cardinals' single-season chart behind only Chris Williams (90) and Patrick Jackson (81) from the 2001-02 season.Â
Â
El-Amin has scored in double figures 24 times, matching Teague for the most on the team, and ranks second on the squad with 72 assists. He also drew the assignment of defending the opposing team's top scoring guard during conference play, helping the Cardinals become the top defensive team in the league.

Â
Coleman led all MAC freshmen in scoring (10.2 ppg), rebounding (5.4 rpg) and assists (3.2 apg) during conference play. The Indianapolis product was second on Ball State's team in rebounding and third in scoring from his point guard position during the MAC schedule. He took over the starting role in early December and started the final 23 games of the season.Â
Â
Coleman scored double figures in half of BSU's league games and had his four highest-scoring performances in the final month, including a MAC season-high 19 against Eastern Michigan. His 288 points rank 10th on Ball State's all-time freshman scoring list.

Â
Ball State enters the MAC Tournament with wins in four of its past five games. The Cardinals earned a share of the league's West Division championship for the third time in the past five years and secured the No. 3 seed in the tournament, the program's best seed since 2009.
