March 01, 2020 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Ball State led for much of the day, but a late rally lifted Michigan State past the Cardinals 7-4 in South Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Four players had two hits and Nick Powell and Noah Navarro each scored two runs.
SPARTANS, CARDS TRADE BIG INNINGS
BSU (3-7) took the lead with a four-spot in the top of the 3rd inning, but MSU would answer late. Ball State put together five hits and a sac fly in the 3rd, with four players each driving in a run. The innings started with singles by Powell and Navarro, who both scored. Ross Messina hit a sac fly while Devin Porter, Chase Sebby and Trenton Quartermaine each hit an RBI single. Ball State led 6-2 Michigan State got one back in the bottom of the 4th and then struck for a big innings in the 7th.
Michigan State improved to 8-3 on the year and got three RBIs from Peter Ahn and three hits and two runs from Bryce Kelley.
QUARTERMAINEÂ DELIVERING
After 10 games, a newcomer is leading the team in hitting. Quartermaine leads the team in batting average (.417), RBIs (8) runs scored (6). Quartermaine went 2-for-3 with two RBIs on Sunday and also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch.Â
CHAYCE'S BEST OUTING
Making his second start of the year, Chayce McDermott gave 5.0 quality innings on Sunday. McDermott struck out six and held the lead when he left the game. It was his best start since he was named MAC Pitcher of the Week with a win over Central Michigan last April.Â
RECAPPING GREENVILLE
Ball State went 1-3 over the weekend playing at the home stadium of the Greenville Drive, a Boston Red Sox minor league affiliate. The highlight of the weekend was picking up a 7-4 win over Kansas on Saturday. It's one of just four wins by MAC teams over a school from a Power 5 conference so far this year (Ball State over Kansas, WMU over USC, CMU over Arizona and NIU over Boston College).
UP NEXT
There's more spring break baseball ahead for Ball State. The Cardinals have five games on the schedule, starting Wednesday evening at Gardner-Webb. Next weekend is the Swig & Swine Classic in Charleston, where Ball State will play four games.
