Cardinals Walked Off At Gardner-Webb
March 04, 2020 | Baseball
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Sometimes baseball can be cruel. The Ball State baseball team led for much of Wednesday night's game at Gardner-Webb but sometimes...baseball can be cruel. A walk-off home run by Gardner-Webb in the bottom of the 9th lifted the home team past the Cardinals 4-3.
"We had many opportunities and just couldn't get the big hit," head coach Rich Maloney said. "Hitting is contagious and right now it is not going our way."
GARDNER-WEBB GAME-WINNER
With the score tied 3-3, Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the 9th. Ross Messina walked and Noah Navarro reached on an error to put runners at the corners but GWU closer Chase Lane got out of the inning. With the first pitch of the bottom of the 9th, Keiji Parkhurst hit a ball out to straight center to steal the game from the Cardinals.
WALK THIS WAY
Messina had a rare kind of game, walking four times in his five plate appearances. That mark tied the single-game school record set many times. The last Cardinal to walk four times in a game was 2019 grad John Ricotta, which took place in May 2018.
TY TIME
Right-hander Ty Weatherly started the game and worked a strong 4+ innings. He struck out three and allowed just one hit and one run. Tyler Hill entered in the 5th inning and gave two scoreless innings of relief to give Ball State a 3-1 lead after six innings.
SPRING BREAK DEJA VU
During last year's midweek spring break game, Ball State lost 9-8 in 13 innings at Central Florida. The Cardinals would bounce back to win four of their next five games.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals have four scheduled at the Swig & Swine Classic in Charleston, S.C., this weekend. BSU will open against Yale Friday morning at 11 a.m. before playing Sacred Heart in a night game.
