Setting the Stage
For the ninth consecutive year, the Ball State men's golf team will open the spring portion of its schedule by hosting the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play in Florida.
Ball State is the No. 1 seed, based on Golfstat rankings, and will square off with No. 8 seed DePaul in the opening round. The teams also met in the first round last year with the Cardinals edging the Blue Demons.
The other match in the Cardinals' half of the bracket features No. 4 seed Eastern Michigan against No. 5 seed Loyola Chicago. The first-round matchups on the other side of the draw feature No. 2 seed Bowling Green against No. 7 seed Drake and No. 3 seed Dayton versus No. 6 seed Xavier.
Every team will play three matches over the two days. Winners will advance in the championship bracket, while losing teams will continue competition in the consolation bracket. Each team match will consist of six individual matches.
Ball State is a two-time champion of the event, having won in 2012 and 2014. Formerly known as the Mid-American Match Play, the event was renamed in 2015 in honor of former Ball State men's golf coach Earl Yestingsmeier, who passed away in January 2014.
The Cardinals finished third at last year's event, defeating Eastern Michigan in the third-place match. Miami won the tournament but is not back to defend its title.
Ball State's fall schedule was highlighted by a season-opening victory at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and a third-place finish at Xavier's Musketeer Classic. The Cardinals feature four players with sub-75 scoring averages, led by Keegan Bronnenberg at 72.13 and Joey Ranieri at 72.67.
