Brown Scores 1,000th Career Point In Road Loss At Eastern Michigan
February 22, 2020 | Women's Basketball
YPSILANTI, Mich. - Junior Oshlynn Brown scored her 1,000th point at Eastern Michigan today but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals lost a hard fought 61-58 battle to Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. Brown finished the game with her 12th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The only other player in doubles figures this afternoon was freshman guard Sydney Freeman who finished the game with 14 points.
Just like the game in Muncie the outcome would come down to the wire. As both teams traded baskets and leads in the fourth quarter, Ball State found themselves down by one (58-59) with 11 seconds on the clock and had possession after the timeout but unfortunately turned the ball over after the inbound pass. BSU was forced to foul in its last efforts to win the ball game in order to get possession. The same thing would happen again, allowing the Eagles to lock up the ball game.
It came to no surprise that the second meeting between the Cardinals and the Eagles would be an aggressive defensive battle from both teams at the start of the contest. Ball State was consistently putting the cart before the horse in the first period outscoring EMU, 13-9 to take the lead at the conclusion of the first 10 minutes of action.
In the second frame, the Cardinals continued to maintain somewhat of a lead, even if it was two points or nine (18-9) which was the largest for BSU at the 4:07 mark. But that didn't last long, in a flash the Eagles had put together an 11-2 run to knot the game at 20 with 3:46 left in the first half. After that, both teams traded baskets, the Eagles Courtney Lewis nailed a 3-pointer with 24 second remaining while the Cardinals quickly had to get the ball down the court in enough time for the final shot of the half. Freeman managed to find sophomore Thelma Dis Agustsdottir time for one behind the arc, tying the game 29-29 at intermission.
At exactly the 9:31 mark of the third quarter, Brown hit a layup for her 1,000th career point as a Cardinal, becoming the 28th member to join the elite club. Entering today's contest, Brown was in need of only six points. Ball State struggled in the third frame to get some good looks offensively while the Eagles began to find their offensive groove taking their largest lead of the game (44-38) with just over two minutes left in the third period. Ball State still trailed by four as time was winding down but Brown nailed a long range 3-pointer to make it a one-point (43-44) ball game heading into the final 10 minutes.
For the game, the box score was comparable, both teams didn't shoot particularly well, 34 percent to be exact, rebounds were fairly even with Ball State out-rebounding the Eagles by one (43-42) along with turnovers were similar as well. The one statistical category that played a huge role today were free throws. Eastern Michigan was sent to the line 22 times (13-22) while Ball State only had 14 (12-14) opportunities from the charity stripe.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home next week for two contests against Mid-American West Division rivals Toledo (Feb. 26) and league leader Central Michigan (Feb. 29). The games will be played at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively in Worthen Arena.
