Junior Oshlynn Brown collects her third-straight double-double and 13th of the season
MUNCIE, Ind. - Junior Oshlynn Brown turned in her third straight double-double and 13th of the season with a 22-point, 13-rebound performance in the Cardinals 66-60 win over Toledo Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. Also in double figures for Ball State was redshirt freshman Anna Clephane, who finished with 10 points.
With Ball State's (19-8, 11-4 MAC) victory tonight over the Rockets (11-15, 6-9 MAC), the Cardinals improved to 8-0 at home in Mid-American Conference action.
The teams traded baskets throughout the opening minutes of the ball game, with three ties and four lead changes. Ball State finally gained a little bit of footing, holding onto a slight lead for over a four-minute stretch, but Toledo kept on the heels of the Cardinals, tying the contest, 19-19, with 19 seconds on the clock. Sophomore Thelma Dis Agustsdottir closed out the first frame with a last second layup to give the Cardinals the 21-19 lead over Toledo.
Senior Arbrie "Deuce" Benson opened the second quarter with a quick layup, sparking a 7-2 run to stretch the Cardinals lead over the Rockets (28-21) by the media timeout. Back-to-back layups from Brown and Benson helped build the lead to nine. The Cardinals made it a double-digit cushion (36-25) over Toledo at intermission after a layup from graduate senior Jasmin Samz. Ball State used an aggressive defense in the second period, holding the Rockets to only three field goals and a 17 percent shooting percentage. By halftime, Brown had already reach double figures, leading all players with 14 points.
Toledo came out hot in the third, putting together a 10-2 scoring spree that cut Ball State's once 11-point lead down to three (38-35) by the 5:42 mark. Brown knocked down two free throws and Anna Clephane downed a 3-point basket that ended the Cardinals drought and put BSU back up by seven with 4:42 on the clock. After that, layups were made from freshmen Sydney Freeman, Annie Rauch and Estel Puiggros that allowed Ball State to take a nine-point edge over the Rockets heading into the final frame of action.
In the final stanza, the Cardinals got a little frustrated on the defensive end, committing some fouls underneath the basket that sent the Rockets to the line allowing Toledo to quickly make it a five-point (51-46) contest with just two minutes shaved off the clock. Benson quickly answered for BSU with a layup in the paint to keep the Cardinals momentum going. Toledo and Ball State continued to play scrappy defense against each other the duration of the quarter. Despite Toledo's comebacks, the Cardinals managed to keep their composure. The Rockets came within four points on six different occasions, even towards the end with just a minute left. A steal from Clephane with 50 seconds on the clock, along with some made free throws from Clephane and Freeman, prevented Toledo from getting any closer the remainder of the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team will play its last Mid-American Conference regular season home game of the year this Saturday when it hosts league leader Central Michigan in Worthen Arena at 1 p.m. The Cardinals will also pay tribute to their three seniors – Arbrie "Deuce" Benson, Jasmin Samz and Aliyah Walker – prior to the contest.
