February 16, 2020 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - It was a busy weekend for the Ball State women's tennis team, as the Cardinals competed in three-straight matches, one on the road and two at home. The Cardinals (6-1) closed the weekend with a 7-0 sweep over Oakland University (3-2) Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
The Cardinals cruised past Oakland in doubles action, winning on all three courts. Amy Kaplan alongside her doubles partner Victoria Sec eased their way into a 6-1 victory over the grizzlies Darya Maltseva and Alexandra Whall at the No. 2 doubles position. After that, the Cardinals No. 1 twosome of Livia Lukacs and Emma Peeler defeated Ava Thielman and Victoria Kurz 6-3 on the top court, clinching the doubles point for Ball State. Last on the court was the No. 3 duo of Rebecca Herrington and Jessica Braun, the doubles tandem completed the sweep after beating Nirva Patel and Aarja Chakraborty.
Peeler would be the first singles match off of the court, after taking down Nira Patel by a score of 6-4, 6-0 at position two. Shortly after, Herrington managed a 6-2, 6-1 defeat over Kurz at No. 4 singles, moving the Cardinals to a quick 3-0 lead with four courts remaining.
Ball State was in good shape for the win over Oakland despite losing first sets on courts one and five, the Cardinals were up a set at the No. 3 and 6 slots. Although Kaplan did register the fourth point at the No. 3 spot, allowing the Cardinals to take the match from the Grizzlies, it wasn't easy. She fought back after being down each set but overcame the first frame and seconds frames winning each, 6-4. Emily Desai competed at the No. 6 match, winning in straight sets over Samantha Galloway. Lukacs came back at the No. 5 slot after losing the first set 6-1 to Aarja Chakraborty, she came back to take frames two and three by a 6-1 decision to claim the three-set thriller.
Braun closed out the match with a hard fought two set tiebreaking win on the top court to complete the sweep for Ball State.
The Ball State women's tennis team will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 23 when it stays in-state to play at Big Ten foe Indiana. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. in Bloomington.
