Long Ball Propels Ball State Softball Past Alabama A&M
February 16, 2020 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - - After a scoreless first inning, Ball State softball's bats came to life in the second as senior first baseman Janae Hogg and junior catcher Delanie Johnson each blasted two-run home runs to propel the team to a 9-1 (5) victory over Alabama A&M Sunday morning at Jacksonville's Pruitt Softball Complex.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals finished the Jacksonville/UNF Classic with a 3-2 record and improved to 5-5 on the year.
Â
With senior pitcher Alyssa Rothwell striking out four batters over the first two innings, and finishing her 3.0 innings of work allowing just two hits and no earned runs, it was the offense's turn to take over in the bottom of the second.
Â
Senior right fielder Gabby Magnifico opened the five-run rally with a double to left field, extending her current hitting streak to a career-high five games. Hogg followed her second home run of the season to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Â
Following a walk to junior designated player Kendall Fields, Johnson smashed her first home run for the Cardinals with another two-run shot to left field. A junior transfer from Lake Land College, Johnson blasted 13 home runs over her two-year career with the Lakers.
Â
The Cardinals were then able to take advantage of a pair of Bulldogs (0-10) errors to score a fifth run in the inning. Freshman second baseman Haley Wynn reached base on the first error, and after stealing second base, scored on the second.
Â
Following a scoreless third inning, AAMU was able to capitalize on a Ball State error in the top of the fourth for its only run of the game.
Â
The Cardinals countered with four more runs in the fifth, ending the game on a two-out walk-off single to left by junior catcher Stacy Payton. Magnifico opened the inning with a single, while sophomore pinch runner Becca Clanton scored on a Fields double.
Â
Johnson then delivered her third RBI of the game with a double to left, plating junior pinch runner Katie Janiga and giving Ball State a 7-1 lead. After a walk to sophomore right fielder Trinity Eckerty and a single by H. Wynn to load the bases, a sac fly from sophomore shortstop Amaia Danial gave the Cardinals an 8-1 lead. Payton then closed the game with her single off the fence in left.
Â
In addition to the strong pitching from Rothwell, sophomore Tieghan Morio threw the final 2.0 innings, holding Alabama A&M hitless while yielding just one unearned run.
