Sebby, Losey Shine In Doubleheader At Georgia Southern
February 15, 2020 | Baseball
STATESBORO, Georgia - Ball State got some promising pitching from Kyle Nicolas early and Zach Losey had his best outing as a Cardinal Saturday, but Georgia Southern otherwise slugged to the tune of 23 runs on 25 hits to take both ends of a doubleheader. GSU has won the first three games of the weekend, and the two teams will finish the series Sunday at noon.
"Kyle, Chase Sebby and Zach were bright spots in an otherwise tough day," head coach Rich Maloney said. "We'll regroup and work to get better."
Here's a breakdown of each game
GAME 1: Georgia Southern 7, Ball State 4 / Box Score
Kyle Nicolas pitched 5.0 shutout innings and struck out eight with one walk and Ball State broke out to a lead before Georgia Southern rallied late to win. The Cardinals led 4-1 in the 7th inning before the host team struck for a six-run inning that included six walks and an error. The Cardinals put two runners on in the 9th inning to make things interesting, but Georgia Southern induced a double play to end the threat.
Ball State broke a scoreless tie in the 5th when Chase Sebby doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Aaron Simpson. Sebby added a two-run single in the 6th inning to give the Cards a 4-0 lead.
Georgia Southern then scored seven unanswered runs over the next two innings to put the game away. Sebby finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Simpson had two hits and a walk.
GAME 2: Georgia Southern 16, Ball State 0 / Box Score
Fifteen Georgia Southern batters scored in the bottom of the 1st inning and the home team batted around twice to take control of Saturday's nightcap. Ball State used three pitchers in the 1st inning that saw 12 GSU hits and two BSU errors.
Down 15-0, Ball State turned to Zach Losey for innings and the young right-hander turned in the best performance of his college career. Losey worked 5.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and a walk. He retired 15 of the 19 batters he faced and was a bright spot on a tough night. Offensively, Nick Powell reached base three times as Ball State managed five singles on the night.
Six GSU players had multiple hits and seven scored multiple runs. GSU's David Johnson earned the win with 5.0 shutout innings and eight strikeouts.
Chayce McDermott is scheduled to go in the series finale Sunday at noon. Check the Ball State schedule page for game coverage.
